Moraine Lake

No. The access road to Moraine Lake has been closed to personal vehicles since the summer of 2023. The only way to access Moraine Lake now is through shuttle services. For the sporty spices, it is still possible to bike, run, and hike up the road – be warned, it’s a steep and winding 10km long road.

However, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can still bike, run, or hike up the road. Fair warning though – it’s a steep and winding 10km journey! On that note; we’d recommend to choose alternative routes for a safer and more leisurely experience. Despite the closure to personal vehicles, shuttle buses continue to operate in the area, contributing to high traffic with large vehicles.

No. Starting in 2023, Moraine Lake Road has been permanently closed to personal vehicles year-round. This measure was implemented to address excessive traffic congestion and improve the visitor experience. Consequently, driving to or parking your own vehicle at Moraine Lake is no longer permitted.

Explore the Via Via shuttles with multiple daily departures from Canmore & Banff to Moraine Lake, and tailor your adventure!

We don’t think so! After careful calculations, considering affordability, experiencing the Rockies, and time-sensitivity, we’ve determined that our shuttles are the better option. We strive to set an example by being part of the solution to the growing personal vehicle traffic, parking shortages, and the impact on the national park. Additionally, we ensure our employees are paid a living wage in this costly area.

Finally, we aim to ensure that our visitors make the most out of their trip and can truly appreciate the beauty of this area. We don’t want you wasting time in traffic, playing “Pac-Man” to find a parking spot, or encountering unexpected expenses that hike up your travel costs. Make the most of your journey and truly discover the Rockies!

Additionally with this year’s major road construction in Lake Louise, Parks Canada expects even longer waiting times and highly recommends to take a shuttle to visit both Lake Louise & Moraine Lake.
Read more about it here.

Absolutely! Experience the best of both worlds with our Lake-Louise-stop shuttle, operating twice daily, providing a unique opportunity to explore these two gems. Enjoy a one-hour stop to explore Lake Louise before continuing your journey to Moraine Lake.

The exact distance from Canmore to Moraine Lake is 110 km. When using our shuttle service from Canmore, your one-way trip to Moraine Lake will typically take between 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Please be aware that Moraine Lake is located in the mountains, where there is little to no cell service available.

Another good reason to make sure you do not miss your scheduled returning shuttle!

Yes. When booking your departing shuttle to Moraine Lake, you will be asked to book a returning shuttle from Moraine Lake back to your departure destination.

It is very important you take the returning shuttle you booked!

Missing your scheduled shuttle means you may have to wait until the last return shuttle (sunset shuttle) departs Moraine Lake at 11 PM – if this one still has capacity. Alternatively, you’d need to arrange for a taxi at your own expense. Due to our limited capacity to and from Moraine Lake, we cannot accommodate flexibility in choosing a different return shuttle.

Although we are the sole shuttle service offering multiple daily departing & returning shuttles from Canmore & Banff, there are other shuttles to Moraine Lake.

Apart from one daily sunrise shuttle from Canmore, most shuttles are either tour operators with varied destinations or depart from Lake Louise.

Shuttles departing from Lake Louise are more frequent, but entail the need to drive there yourself (rent a car, pay national park fees, gas, and parking + there are major road construction in Lake Louise this summer.)

Our shuttles from Canmore with a single Banff pick-up aim to address the escalating traffic and parking issues in Banff & Lake Louise. We offer an affordable, time-efficient service to ensure you maximize your Rockies experience!

In the mountains, it’s essential to be prepared for anything. Remember to bring enough water and layer up! Pack extra socks, a beanie or hat, sunglasses, and blister pads if you’re hiking. And as Baz Luhrmann wisely said, “Ladies & gentlemen: wear sunscreen!” The weather can change drastically and unexpectedly.

While you should never trust the weather forecasts, rest assured, this is the sunniest place in North America!

If you’re planning a day hike on one of the many trails that start at Moraine Lake, we highly recommend bringing bear spray. You can rent bear spray from our partnering shops: SkiBig3, Gear Up, Chateau Mountain Sports, and Ultimate Sports in Canmore and Banff.

If you’re staying on the trails alongside Moraine Lake, bear spray is not necessary.

Please, never approach wildlife; it’s their National Park, and respecting their boundaries ensures safety for all. Thank you!

Absolutely! Moraine Lake has it’s own Canoe rental. Find more information on their website.

Although there is no camping anywhere near Moraine Lake, you can stay at the lake in the Moraine Lake Lodge. Bookings are possible via their website.

Yes. Moraine Lake is located in Banff National Park, but rest assured your National Park Fee is included in our ticket price. 😉

Lake Louise

It is possible to drive with a personal vehicle to Lake Louise, but not to Moraine Lake. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You’ll need a National Park Pass
  • You’ll need to pay for parking
  • You’ll need a lot of patience finding parking
  • There are major road constructions happening on the Lake Louise drive. Parks Canada expects an increase in traffic and waiting times and advises all visitors to take a shuttle to Lake Louise.

Read more about it here or book a shuttle to Lake Louise & Moraine Lake from Canmore or Banff, and safe yourselves the stress and hassle.

Yes. This summer, Parks Canada will be undertaking necessary road constructions on Lake Louise Drive, the access road to both Lake Louise & Moraine Lake.

With the usual summer traffic and anticipated delays from construction, leaving your car at the hotel or campsite is a smart move. Avoid the roadwork headaches, relax on our comfortable shuttles, and arrive at your destination stress-free.

Parks Canada advises all visitors to book a shuttle to visit Lake Louise & Moraine Lake. Read more about it here.

No, you do not need a shuttle to go to Lake Louise, however, due to major road constructions it is recommended to leave your car at the hotel or campside and take a shuttle to visit Lake Louise.
More information about this year’s major road construction can be found here.

Check out our shuttles and visit both Lake Louise & Moraine Lake in one go!

Since we encourage visitors to park their cars at the hotel and campside to decrease the amount of personal vehicles in the National Park, we only have pick-up locations in the towns of Canmore & Banff.

Customers that book our Lake Louise-stop shuttle will have one hour to explore Lake Louise before continuing their journey to Moraine Lake.

It is very confusing, but Lake Louise is both a lake as well as a town. The town is named after the lake, so when we are referring to Lake Louise for our operations, we are referring to the Lake and not the town.

If you’re staying on the trails alongside Lake Louise, during our one-hour stop, you won’t need to bring bear spray.

However, if you’re planning a day hike on one of the many trails that start at Moraine Lake, we highly recommend bringing bear spray.

Absolutely! Please keep in mind that our shuttle only stops for one hour at Lake Louise, to then continue the journey to Moraine Lake. Keep this in mind when renting a Canoe at Lake Louise – our shuttles do not wait.

Canoe rentals are also available at Moraine Lake!

Yes, but please keep in mind this is paid parking with limited capacity – due to major road construction the lakeside parking capacity will be even less than usual!

Yes, so if you decide to drive to Lake Louise, you will need to purchase a Banff National Park pass. Passes are available on Parks Canada’s website or at the National Park entrance.

Please do not underestimate mighty Mount Temple!

Attempting to reach the summit of Mount Temple (3550 meters / 11 621 ft.) is an enormous task! Don’t get me wrong, it is without a doubt, the best hike you’ll do in the Rocky Mountains or maybe in your life, but this hike is only recommended for experienced hikers, using the right gear, and making the correct preparations.

If you are undertaking this hike we recommend:

  • booking our Sunrise shuttle (Early Bird shuttle as the latest option to start your hike.)
  • booking our last returning daytime shuttle.
  • Give yourself enough time – experienced hikers take 10-12 hours to complete this hike!
  • renting hiking poles and climbing helmets (protect yourself from rocks falling down)
  • taking a look at the maps beforehand and make sure to bring a map.

Please make sure to bring loads of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, and layers – it gets colder the higher you climb.

Last but not least, have an amazing time and enjoy every single second of it! 😎

We highly recommend booking a spot on our Sunrise shuttle or as the latest departure option, our Early Bird shuttle. All our departing shuttles after these 2 shuttles will not give you enough time to complete the Mount Temple hike.
Experience hikers take minimum 10-12 hours to complete this hike.

When choosing your returning shuttle from Moraine Lake we recommend you choose our latest returning daytime shuttle leaving at 6:15 PM.

Experience hikers take a minimum of 10-12 hours to complete the Mount Temple hike. Please only attempt this giant if you are an experienced hiker!

When taking on Mount Temple we recommend booking a spot on our Sunrise shuttle for departure, and our latest returning daytime shuttle at 6:15 PM.

These hikes are the so called “point to point hikes” and need a little bit more preparation and organization.

The hikes listed below have trailheads at both Moraine Lake & Lake Louise, and are only for very experienced hikers:

  • Paradise Valley Trail
    20km – 8 to 10 hours – 800m of elevation
  • Wenkchemna Pass
    19.5km – 8 to 10 hours – 930m of elevation
  • Saddleback Trail
    20km – 8 to 10 hours – 520m of elevation

To complete these hikes using our shuttle service there is only 1 option – which again only works for very experienced hikers.

For these hikes we recommend booking a spot on our 1st Lake Louise-stop shuttle departing at 9AM – and starting your hike immediately when arriving at Lake Louise. Please let your driver know that you will not continue your journey without them after the one hour stop at Lake Louise. (This is very important – thank you!)

For your returning shuttle you’ll need to reserve a spot on the returning Sunset shuttle departing at 10:30PM at Moraine Lake.

Please note that this shuttle only operates from June 21st until August 31st. Outside these dates it is not possible to use our shuttles when undertaking these hikes.

Unfortunately, this won’t be possible at this time. Due to the major road constructions in Lake Louise this summer, we had to adjust our schedule and won’t be able to accommodate guests that are wanting to hike Lake Agnes, The Big Beehive, and other hikes starting at Lake Louise.

Our Lake Louise-stop shuttles offer maximum 1 hour to explore, to then continue your journey to Moraine Lake. Drop offs, and pick-ups at Lake Louise won’t be possible this summer.
We apologize for the inconvenience, and we understand your frustration. Once the major road construction is behind us, we will do our very best to accommodate all our guests again.

Absolutely! Although this isn’t a pick-up nor drop-off destination in your booking – our drivers are able to drop you off and pick you off at the Lake Anette trailhead.

Please notify your driver once you get on the shuttle that you need to be dropped off at the Lake Anette trailhead. For your returning shuttle, make sure to be back at the trailhead in time for the returning shuttle you booked from Moraine Lake, and wave our shuttle down once it’s near Lake Anette’s trailhead. (You’ll recognize our bright logo!)

(You’ll recognize our bright logo!)

Day hikes & Mount Temple

For a quick yet satisfying and relaxing hike around Moraine Lake we would recommend the following:

  • Moraine Rockpile
This is not really a hike, but still a little bit of climb so we counted it. This definitely the most scenic place to take your Moraine Lake picture.

  • Moraine Lake Shore Trail
    3km – 1 tot 2 hours – 160m of elevation

  • Consolation Lakes Trail
    6km – 3 to 4 hours – 255m of elevation – recommended hike for families

For full day hikes and more experienced hikers we recommend the following trails:

  • Sentinel Pass via Larch Valley
11 km – 4 to 5 hours – 800m of elevation – best done end of September to see golden larch trees

  • Panorama ridge
    11.1 km – 5 to 6 hours – 1131m of  elevation

  • Eiffel Lake Trail
    12 km – 4 to 5 hours – 580m of elevation
Please visit our Day Hikes page for more information & links to the trails.

  • booking our last returning daytime shuttle back.
