Canoeing on Lake Louise - A quintessential Canadian experience
Lake Louise is a truly pristine example of a glacially fed lake, boasting bright turquoise waters
that are enchanting to see in person. Surrounded by towering peaks and backed by the jaw-
dropping Victoria Glacier, one of the best ways to experience the grandeur is to paddle on the
glassy waters in a red canoe.
The Paddling Experience
The lake's calm waters are ideal for canoeing, providing a smooth experience even for
beginners. Lake Louise is mostly sheltered from the wind thanks to the surrounding mountains,
so you can expect paddling to be easier than some of the larger lakes in Banff National Park.
As you paddle further away from the boathouse, you are able to find secluded spots away from
the crowded shoreline, where you can soak in the serenity of your surroundings, creating an
almost meditative experience. There are many great photo opportunities along the way, with
fantastic views of the Victoria Glacier at the far end of the lake.
Getting on the water
Canoe rentals at Lake Louise are handled by the Lake Louise Boathouse, which is situated on
the lake’s eastern shore. The Boathouse is open daily from 8:30am to 8:30pm (weather
permitting) and offers rentals on a first-come, first-served basis. Each rental includes Life
Jackets and Paddles, so there is no need to bring any equipment yourself.
Each canoe can hold either 2 or 3 adults, or two adults and two small children at one time.
Rentals are offered on a half-an-hour or one hour basis, starting from and returning to the
boathouse making it easy to understand for all. Once you’re all kitted out its as simple as
paddling away into paradise!
Canoe 101 - Tips for paddling like a pro
The Boathouse staff are here to help with any paddling instruction, so listen carefully to their
advice for navigating the lake safely.
For those new to paddling, it’s important to know that whichever side of the canoe you paddle
on, the boat will turn the opposite way.
Pack a warm layer, as the temperature on Lake Louise can feel much cooler than on the
lakeshore.
Keep centred in the boat at all times as to avoid risk of the icy cold water.
Be sure to check the Lake Louise Boathouse website for the most up to date information on
pricing and operating hours prior to your visit.
